How Karma Applies to Animals, this article was so wonderful and insightful! I love animals, and that includes dogs, and I was wondering from a Hindu perspctve sometimes about keeping pets, such as a puppy dog. What about pets, or is it best not to have sich and only help and love wild animals and domestics such as gomata? Om Namah Sivaya

I am sorry I did not visit the Forum page for sometime and missed this.

The same laws of karma apply equally to pets. However, since pets are under our constant care and since we are responsible for their welfare, a lot depends upon how we treat them and take care of them on an going basis. I believe Pets come into your life as part of your past karma to teach you valuable lessons in loving kindness, selflessness, and unconditional love. They may even come as part of the karmic debt we owe to others in the past or they owe to us. Some of the pets may have been humans in their past lives and related to us in some way or they may be on the verge of becoming humans in their future lives. Interaction with humans gives the pets a great opportunity to develop their consciousness and individuality. The pets also help us in our spiritual growth. I am not sure whether we can really repay in any way the love and attention our pets show to us and the lessons they teach us. I also heard that some pets may reunite with their masters in the next world. There is a story in the Mahabharat in which a dog follows the five Pandavas on their way to  heaven, via the hell.
