An American Convert

Greetings to all!

I am in Florida and I have had the pleasure of meeting someone who is a Jain and I have been quite impressed with this person. They have something unique...peace and happiness through difficulty.

I have been on a religious quest for some time now as it is around 2-3 years. Through my studies and research I have began to develop a framework for what my belief system truly is. I have had to begin to work with what "I" truly feel mainly since no religion that I have discovered has been close to what feels correct.

Until now.

I have been reading and studying Jainism and I am absolutely amazed to see that some of the ways I feel sincerely in my heart are shown in Jainism. I am curious...how does a white american male make a place in Jainism? I do enjoy community and I am excited but also nervous at trying to engage in the local Jain community.

Do you think I would be accepted?

I have searched for so long and I have never quite had a 'connection' with anything so far like I feel about Jainism.

The United Nations on Thursday flew its blue flag at half-mast at the UN Headquarters in New York to mourn the UN staff members who were killed in a terrorist attack on Wednesday morning in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

The UN flag were hoisted at half-mast before the UN Secretariat Building in the compound on the First Avenue in midtown Manhattan, central New York City, and another blue flag was seen flying at half-mast near the visitor's entrance.

The United Nations took the mourning step following the deadly attack that killed at least five UN staff members and wounded nine others at the UN guesthouse in Kabul.

"Not counting (UN) peacekeepers, 27 UN civilian personnel have lost their lives to violence so far this year, more than half of them in Afghanistan and Pakistan," UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters here after he briefed the closed-door meeting of the Security Council.

They are really heros who deserve our respectation.So I will mark wordswe wil remenber you,heroson each of my collection of lanyards.I hope more and more people will put ouar nations security and esteem to the highest position.

"Increasingly, the United Nations is being targeted. In this case, precisely because of our support for the Afghan elections," he said.

"We are not deterred," Ban said. "But we can not do it alone, we need support of the member states."

"We must realistically assess the situation and put in place more effective projections for our staff as they perform their crucial tasks," he said. "This was the main purpose my briefing to the Security Council."

We all know that we have a great litterature with us.We all are aware with the stories of ramayana, mahabharat,panchtantra and many more mythological and historical kathas, studies of these stories gives us an idea of our past period civilization that time the yogis, devs, danavs, yakshas, some of them were capable to represent themselves at many places at a time.They were termed as Mayavis, i.e literate of magic or maya.also they can dissappeare from ones eyesight, they can form an army within a fraction of time all this proves that they were more strong and capable than our present generation example- ravana, meghnada, hanumana, ghatothkacch, hiranyakashyapa etc. etc. So does anybody has thought about this thing? Can such a phenomenon can take place in ones life! actuallywhat was that which we are unable to understand at present. The answer of this question is that all supernatural powers and other capabilities were with them because they knew the principle and application of fourth dimention, they were capable to travel and express themselves in the 4th dimention which cannot be recognized and detected easily by normal human beings, which remains hidden behind every dimention of 3D structure. Einstiens theory of relativity created a hope for the search of 4th dimention, but till now nobody has got sucess in search of this dimention with the help of modern or classic physics theories or by sprituality by so called dharmic gurus of present generation.

The 4th dimention always terminates between space-time curvature also the unit, quantum, and nature of this dimention is not known by our scientists. Individuality of the soul

In the Dvaita philosophical view of Vedic teachings, the soul retains its individuality thru' pralay and eternally stays an individual.

What gives the 'individual' soul/AtmA its individuality or distinction when it is pure and liberated ?

The subtle body cannot possibly stay after liberation, because then that would not be liberation. So what gives the soul I-ness , identity which "it" can perceive ? It is understandable that Parameshvar identifies individual pure liberated souls. But how can the soul know this ?

How can the individual soul have a preference, choice, decision, action, and a role to play in the Lord's Leelas after the mind, intelligence, ego and all subtle matter is gone ?

Head Shaving Ceremony

Hello: I am invited to a head shaving ceremony for friends' son, and I am wondering if a gift of some sort for the chlld is the proper etiquette. I am looking forward to the event, but am American and have never had any experience with the Hindu religion. I would appreciate any feedback you could give me. Also, if a gift is in order, is there anything in particular that would be appropriate,or more importantly, inappropriate.

Who is this saint?

The following is an passage from my father's book "The Long Road Back", concerning his experiences in WWII. He met a saint in Bombay that had some sort of connection to Ghandi, though I know that Ghandi did not have a guru.

I would very much like to know who the Hindu saint is that my father describes. My limited research could not pin down the historical person. He sounds somewhat like BABAJI, but he is more of a mythical than a historical personality. The ashes all over his body tend to indicate that he was a sadhu.

Mahatma Ghandi was in a British prison in 1942 and was held at a British compound outside Bombay. We went to the area to receive our monthly paycheck, which was far overdue. Ghandi was housed in a small house, about the size of a garage in the center of a park-like area. We passed next to the building on the way to the naval office. Ghandi was outside getting some exercise. He saw us and waved to us giving a Hindu blessing. This was very special to me as I had long been an admirer of him.

On one of our outings in Bombay, we saw one of Ghandis mentors, an Indian holy man at the Hindu college. The college was in a park-like area and the classes were all outside with the students sitting on the ground surrounding the teachers. As we passed through the area we came upon an elaborate pavilion. As we approached we saw what at first glance was an old man seated in front of a fire. As we drew nearer we saw that he was a young man, handsome, with snow-white hair. He was seated in front of the fire with his legs crossed. We were informed that the position was permanent: he never really moved from that position. He slept that way and performed all other functions from that position. That was his penance to his holy ones. Each time an individual or a group approached him, he reached his hands into the fire and then covered his body with the white ash. An attendant then washed his body clean. He did this over and over again. When we were in front of him, he seemed especially curious and asked our guide about us and then gave us a huge smile and a blessing. While were were in front of him, we observed that his hands were as soft and delicate as a childs hands and his body seemed perfectly formed despite his years of not moving. He was a very handsome man and one felt a special reverence and awe in his presence.
